Gone are the days when outdoor and garden lighting choices were limited to a
halogen floodlight screwed to the back wall above a kitchen window or perhaps a
traditional lantern to the side of the front door to welcome visitors. Naturally
there will always be a place for these practically placed security and welcome
lights, but with the promise of warmer nights to come and attentions turning to
late night outdoor entertaining, to barbecues and al fresco dining, it may be
time to have a look at what is available in the the way of lighting for the
garden and outdoors that's a little more adventurous.

Lighting a typical home accounts for around 20% of its electricity bill. The good news is that fitting low-energy light bulbs is one of the simplest ways to reduce energy use and bills.
Traditional light bulbs come in 40W, 60W and 100W. The low-energy versions give out similar light outputs but are rated 8W, 11W and 15W. They also last much longer, the traditional light bulb lasts on average 1 year compared to the low-energy light bulb which can last up to 10 years.

The lighting industry is going through some revolutionary changes. As is widely known the phasing our of our traditional lamps is already underway. These are being replaced with 3 types of lamp, LED,CFL and Tungsten Halogen.
LED lamps are extremely popular due to their small size and easy connectivity. They are very energy efficient and long lasting. However they are still very expensive if considering changing your whole house over to this form of lighting it is a huge investment.
CFL lamps however are a form of flourescent and available in various shapes and sizes and are a direct replacement for our traditional lamp. They are very energy efficient and far less expensive than the LED's. Some CFL lamps take a little time to reach full intensity but they are available in a range of colours, Warm White,Cool White, Daylight and White. The choice of various colour rendering lamps make them suitable for all situations, for example Daylight in the kitchen gives an excellent working light where as the Warm White would be more suitable for living rooms and dining rooms giving a softer light.
TUNGSTEN HALOGEN lamps are very popular due to their colour rendering. When first introduced they were only available in a low voltage version, now however they are available as candle, golfball and traditional lamps. They give an excellent cool crisp white light which does not lose its intensity when dimmed. These lamps can produce an energy saving of up to 30%
